Story
Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia. That's the equivalent of around 225,000 people every year. My mum is one of these people.
She first developed symptoms around 5 years ago and was formally diagnosed in 2018. Since then our family has been on a very long and difficult journey to try to come to terms with the fact that our loving, kind, helpful mum is slipping away from us.
Having a family member with dementia is hard at the best of times but the current situation with the global pandemic has made it almost impossible to support our dad with his full time role as carer.
She’s still our mum though.. Just less confident, less organised and less clear. She loves seeing her grandchildren, helping me cook (she no longer knows how to do this - which as a retired food tech teacher is heartbreaking,) and going for walks in the fresh air.
So, I will be walking WITH mum on 20th March even though she won’t realise why, she’ll just think it’s a stroll out and about!
Please, if you’re able to donate to such a worthwhile cause that would be incredible! Hopefully one day in the future, when no doubt mum will no longer be around, someone else’s loved one won’t have to go through what we are.
Thank you,
Love Lisa (& mum!) xx
