Story
Around 225,000 people develop dementia every year – that’s the equivalent to one person every three minutes. My nan is one of those people. Dementia is a cruel, long illness which makes the affected person really suffer. It's not just about forgetting things as many people think.. Long term, the affected person is left unable to talk, walk and even swallow. They need 24 hours care, just like a baby. It is a cruel and evil disease which I believe there isn't enough understanding and awareness being raised for just how battering it can be. My nan used to be a strong, independent person with a heart of gold who would give anyone her last pound. She's now in a care home as the disease has now made her unable to look after herself. To watch someone you love so much go through this is horrible. We once was very close, but now she doesn't know who I Am. I can't explain that pain if I tried. I also can't imagine just how she feels or what she is going through. Thousands more people across the UK are also going through this. September and October Memory Walks will be taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to raise money for a world without dementia. Once you donate, Just Giving will send your money directly to the Alzheimer's Society. Please donate and help us walk for a world without dementia. You may not remember nan.. But I'll never forget your roast dinners, charity shop bargains and how you always used to tickle my back for hours. I love you forever. X
