Story

Growing up my grand parents were a huge part of my life, we were a very close knit family and both sets of my grand parents were a part of my day - to - day life. In 2002 my Nanny was 67 years old and we started to notice that things just were not right, soon after Alzheimers was diagnosed. It was absolutely devastating and heart breaking to all around to see little nanny piece by piece be taken by the disease. Nanny was always such a proud lady everything had to be just so, from her house to her appearance not one grey hair in sight. Heaven forbid! Each year the disease had taken a little bit more of nanny away. In 2009 Nanny had to go into a care home as it was no longer safe for her to be at home even with carers. The most heart breaking of it all was she didn't realise it was what was best for her. She didn't understand to her she was absolutely fine there was no problem. Year by year the Alzheimers has claimed just a little bit more. January this year nanny turned 80! Although now the disease has taken a lot of my Nanny she is still here with us. She is no longer able to do anything for herself. Not even the simply things we all take for granted like feeding ourselves or brushing our teeth. Nanny is totally dependent on the carers and family.

In 2010 at 91 my other nanny also started to show signs of the alzheimers disease. Nanny was in the early stages and stayed in her home with my grandad. In 2014 Grandad sadly passed away and so nanny was placed into a care home she still knew who we were and although she too didn't understand why she had to go into a home it was best for her. Alzheimers didn't take full hold of nanny as she sadly passed away in May 2014.

I have decided to try to raise some money for Alzheimers as it has been such a massive part of my life for 13 years. If the monies I can raise can help someone else then although it isn't going to help my nanny it could help someone else, it could even be you one day. I was originally aiming for £650 which is such a lot of money but in reality just pays for 1 brain scan. I have amazingly managed to get to that target so have now created a new target. All sponsorship is greatly appreciated every penny counts and will help the charity so much!
Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.
