Story
That cheeky face is two-year old Roux Owen. On Sunday 12th June a team of us, including Roux's Mummy Amy and nine honouree Aunties, will be jogging, walking, crawling, staggering, the Hull 10K. Our aim is to raise money for the amazing NHS heroes on ward L52 at Leeds General Infirmary who saved Roux's life after he was born with a rare brain tumour.
Roux’s story so far…
At four weeks old Roux was diagnosed with a tumour the size of two tangerines, which had taken over half of his brain. His parents, Antony and Amy, were told by the staff at Leeds General Infirmary to say goodbye to their baby boy as he was whisked away for emergency brain surgery. An operation doctors said it was highly unlikely he would survive. A totally inconceivable situation for any parent.
Roux being Roux, he came through that surgery and eleven more since. His non-cancerous tumour, not only incredibly rare, but even rarer for it to be diagnosed in a child, has put up a fight over the last two and a half years. A fight only surpassed by the determination of this little boy.
The damage caused by the tumour is not fully known due to how rare the tumour is and Roux’s age. Only time will tell what impact it has had and what support he will need long term. Weekly seizures are now unfortunately impacting Roux’s recovery and the long list of adventures he needs to go on. Forthcoming tests will hopefully give the family insight and a way forward.
Let’s face it, he’s ripping up the rule books and astounding everyone with his progress.
The challenge...
As a thank you to the amazing NHS team at Yorkshire’s specialist paediatric neurology ward, L52, at Leeds General Infirmary we want to raise as much money as we can by taking part in the Hull 10K. Some may run, some may jog, and some may even crawl round – but however we get round the course, we WILL complete it to raise money for the team of specialists, doctors, nurses, therapists, dieticians and physiotherapists who continue to support Roux.
Thanks for your donation - literally every penny helps.
