Mullets and a half marathon (and a bit) for mental health
You’ve heard the rumours. Now it’s time. This March, mullets will once again be wafting along the halls and wards of DCH for mental health awareness amongst NHS staff.
The stats are stark:
- The BMA reports as of May 2020, 45% of doctors are suffering from depression, anxiety, stress, burnout or other mental health conditions relating to, or made worse by, the COVID crisis.
- One doctor every 3 weeks commits suicide in the NHS.
- 400 NHS staff leave per week citing poor work life balance/ mental health reasons.
- More than 300 NHS workers attempted suicide as they responded to the coronavirus pandemic.
- 92% of trusts told NHS providers that they had concerns over staff well being, stress and burnout following the pandemic.
So you’re probably thinking what are a group of blokes with dodgy haircuts trying to achieve? We will be running a fun half marathon and a bit (25km) as we can all do a bit more for the mental health of our colleagues. Whether that be checking in with a workmate, encouraging each other to take our breaks and making sure we all do what we can so everyone can get home on time.
We will be raising money for The Laura Hyde Foundation- the UK's leading mental health charity providing independent, best in class mental health support to our frontline healthcare and emergency services workers. We appreciate any support, whether that be donating, coming along/ joining the run, growing a mullet or doing a bit more for each other.
Much love,
The Mullet Men
