Story
Day 5 - completed! legs are now tired, what a fantastic day to finish on. sun was out and we had some real fun on the bikes. great to meet the rest of the Devon air ambulance guys back at their pinhoe base. thank you to all the support from Chris for riding with me. Sian and family for food following us around. all the others for their moral support and everyone who has donated. now to collect in the money on the sponsor forms!
Day 3 has begun. . lets hope the sun stays! We made amazing time to Barnstaple, our average speed for 30 miles was over 18mph. We then had a break whilst meeting up with 2 friends, then on we went. We headed north-west to go as close to the coast as possible. The traffic was quite bad to begin with as it was bank holiday Monday. The sky also started to darken, the wind picked up and I started to get cold. After a very steep descent and the climb out of Woolacombe, we both stopped to put on or high-viz jackets. This was a really good idea as the weather just worsened. We met 2 friends from St Austel for lunch and then headed into the moors. The first hill was the realisation that the next 20 miles were going to be painful. 25%inclines and wet weather mean that you have to be extremely careful as the back wheel of your bike may start to spin as it loses grip. After the fourth hill like this and the weather so bad we were worried about being blown off, the sight of the camper van was a welcome one. This is where a quick warm up and some jelly babies really helped. After cycling over 60 miles that day we were about to go up or biggest and highest hill of the ride, but we did it! After about half an hour going up we got to the top of the moors where we had 10 miles left fighting against the wind and rain. The YHA in Exford was a welcome sight. We had survived and now needed to recover before the next day.
Day 2 - the lovely sun stayed today. As we cycled from Kingsbridge to bude. We stopped off in Plymouth briefly to have our photo taken outside the DAAT shop on Mutley plain, then onto the bridge to meet Shelly and Sam. We then popped over into Cornwall to use a road which followed the border. It felt like no time at all before we were stopping for lunch just north of Launceston and were keen to keep going. It was a great moment to crest the top of a hill and see the north coast. We arrived in Bude a full 2 hours ahead of schedule! Now we rested up before the long day tomorrow.
Day 1 - Arrived at DAAT helipad and met the on duty team as well as the CEO Helena and Kate who was on duty during my pick up, she kept telling me I was 'really poorly'. After negotiating out of Exter, we hit the road to Torquay for lunch. After lunch in a back car park with two friends, we hit the road again, after crossing the river Dart we headed straight to Kingsbridge for our campsite. Thank you very much to Parkland caravan and campingsite for the free pitch and donation.
Thanks for taking the time to visit the 500-in-5 JustGiving page.
On 15th May 2012 I was driving home from work when I was involved in a road traffic accident. I was incredibly lucky as the Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT) came out to transport me as quickly as possible to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. This allowed me to get the best medical attention as soon as possible. I was in an induced coma for one week and had an operation to insert a titanium rod into my leg as I had broken my femur.
Whilst recovering in hospital I vowed to help raise money to the team which helped me receive medical attention so quickly. Sian, now my fiancée, suggested I used my love of cycling to help raise the money. Hence 500 in 5 cycling challenge was created.
During 5 days in May, 25/05/13 to 29/05/13, I will be cycling around the entire borders of Devon which is 500 kilometres. I will be starting at the headquarters of DAAT in Exeter. My journey will then take me to Plymouth, Bude, Simonsbath, Lyme Regis and finally back to Exeter. I will be staying as close to the border as possible. It is great to have support from Parkland Caravan and Camping Site in Kingsbridge for a free accommodation on my first night and also donating to my ride.
During my ride I will be accompanied throughout by my close friend Chris, who is also cycling the full distance, with a support vehicle containing my parents and Sian. Hopefully other friends will be able to join me along the way and you can support me through donating to a good cause. Who knows what would have happened if the Devon Air Ambulance Trust had not been available that day...
