Forty years ago only 3% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survived 5 years from diagnosis. Today that number is still the same. Ian died of pancreatic cancer in February 2011 six days after he was diagnosed with the disease.
Despite its high death rate and lack of improvement in chances of survival, pancreatic cancer attracts little research funding in comparison with many other cancers. In 2011, pancreatic cancer attracted just 1% of research funding from the major funding bodies. We want to help support research into pancreatic cancer to improve life expectancy for those who suffer from this disease.
The Tour du Mont Blanc circumnavigates the Mont Blanc Massif, Western Europe’s highest mountain range. 170km in length, the route has in excess of 10000m of ascent and descent, greater than the height of Everest. Passing through France, Italy andSwitzerland, this classic Alpine adventure really is a true test of fitness, stamina and endurance. To add to the challenge, we aim to complete the trek, self-guided, in 7 days (opposed to the more common 11 stages), camping out or staying in mountain refuges along the way.
Aside the obvious physical tests certain to be encountered, crossing the high mountain passes and glacial valleys of three countries, this spectacular route through the Alps is set to be an absolutely unforgettable and exhilarating experience. All the better for a fantastic cause.
