Story
17th May 2010With just one week to go before the peloton of finely tuned and muscle bound lycra'd-up cyclists head to Northern France, I am happy to report that on Saturday James managed to cycle the all important 70 plus miles in 4 hours and 58 minutes (an average of 14.1 mph) - clocking up a massive 1509 miles in training! He covered a large area which took in Bideford, Great Torrington, down to Meeth (the Tarka Trail) and on to Hatherleigh. He then rode back through Shebbear, Stibb Cross and Woolsery - got back to Hartland and discovered that he was shy of the 70 so circled the village a couple of times and arrived home - tired but relieved! A hot bath, tea and a banana soon revived spirits along with the thought of that possible beer in the evening!
Of course all this is for only one reason, and that is to help those wounded guys and girls who do so much for us. We said at the start that James' old regiment, The Queen's Royal Lancers would be out in Afghanistan in 2010 and that they would be especially in our thoughts. Well, they are out there right now and we have just heard that following an IED blast, two men are in hospital here in UK recovering from their wounds. It is all very real now. In the meantime James has also rejoined the TA and 37 members of his new regiment, The Royal Wessex Yeomanry along with some from his old one The Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry are in Afghanistan as well. All of them are very much in our thoughts and prayers.
We cannot thank you enough for your amazing generosity in helping us almost double our original goal in raising a whopping £11,090 so far! THIS IS JUST TERRIFIC! So thank you so, so much...... I wonder if we will be able to get up to £12,000!! Whilst there is so much trouble, hassle and worry in the world, the response we have had has been truly incredible. All we've got to do now is to make sure James gets to the start line and completes the ride! No pressure!
Onwards and a droite we go!
Best Wishes

Well, here we are with just about a month to go before the BIG event! James is doing really well and is on target with his training. At the moment he is averaging a total of 116 miles per week with a hefty 60 plus mile ride at the weekend.
'Our man in lycra' had a mammouth ride this last weekend scaling some exacting and evil hills along the coastal road between Bude and Port Issac on his way down south to where my mother lives near Lerryn on the south coast of Cornwall. He covered some 65 miles and is aiming to hit the 70 mile mark this coming weekend. Despite the tough ride, he is thoroughly enjoying it.
At the moment, conversations are 'peppered' with rich and fruitful words such as cadences, energising, peddle power and the marvels of 'wicking'! We are going 'heavy on carbs' and 'banana milkshake' has become a bit of a 'buzz word'!
We are constantly humbled by the immense generosity and kindness of folk. This continually spurs on James, when there is just one too many potholes, the wind is blowing in the wrong direction and the pins are aching ............ THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
With best wishes,
Di
March 2010
Hooray, Yeehah etc etc etc!!! We have hit our initial target of £6,000 and are still going strong so we have raised the target to £10,000 - a long shot but we are really going for it. We have had so many donations, big and small but three fundraising events, a drinks party in Lostwithiel, a coffee morning in Pelynt and a motorsport evening hosted by Arbuthnot Latham in London have given us a big boost. Thank you all so much for your help. Do you think we can make £10,000??
You are all so kind. I had better get back on my bike! It is all getting very close now and although the 50 mile days have been achieved we are now pushing on to the 60 milers - phew.
As if we needed any more incentive, the channel 4 documentary "Air Hospital" shown last night (25th March) was very moving indeed. If it is repeated please look out for it.
All the best and thank you so much
James

Hello Again,
It's been a few months since we started fundraising and we are humbled by everyones generosity. Thank you so much to those that have pledged and those that have already given. It is much appreciated by us and H4H. We are over halfway to our target figure and desperate to achieve it before the bike ride in May.
The training suffered a slight setback over Christmas and then the ice caused a few problems but luckily the waterrower came into it's own. These cold mornings have seen James wrapped up in his old army waterproofs and something flourescent tootling off on yet another circuit. He has done over 400 miles so far with the longest ride of 30 miles. All of this so far has been on the aging mountain bike but all that is soon to change as he picks up his new bike and lots of lovely lycra on Saturday - photos to follow.
All love and please give generously. The Heroes will be so grateful.

Hello and welcome,
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit our fundraising page for Help for Heroes. An amazing charity set up in 2007 to provide practical help to British military personnel that have been wounded in the current conflicts. The charity has raised a staggering £30 million so far and they're now aiming to raise another £10 million to set up a series of 'Army Recovery Centres' across Great Britain.Last year, when we revamped our website we nominated Help for Heroes as our chosen charity but to our shame, have done nothing to raise money for them - until now...Having not sat on a bicycle for quite a few years, James has signed up to spend six days cycling 350 miles around the battlefields of Northern France with 300 other determined fundraisers in blistered support of Help for Heroes. The Big Battlefield Bike Ride 2010 starts on the 24th May 2010 when they set off from HMS Victory in Portsmouth and will end in Dunkirk in time for the 70th anniversary of the evacuation. Apparently he will be spending 8 – 10 hours in the saddle every day with the longest day's ride being 70 miles!! That’s from London to Southampton to give you some idea.We would dearly like to raise as much money as possible for Help for Heroes and have set our target at £6,000. Hence my asking you to support James on his Big Battlefield Bike Ride. James is selling his motorbike in order to buy a bike without an engine and his fitness training has just started. He's been puffing his way around the hills of North Devon and is also getting the hang of a fantastic 'Waterrower' rowing machine that has very kindly been lent to him by www.rowhire .co.uk, themselves very keen supporters of Help for Heroes.
I did consider sending threatening photos of James in Lycra - but will withhold that for a future missive! So for now, do please dig deep and donate what you can to this incredibly worth-while charity. My 'ready reckoner' follows, but any amount, big or small, would be hugely appreciated - both by us and by those Heroes.£5 per mile = £ 1750
I would like to stay in touch and let you know how James is getting on with his blisters and his fundraising. If you'd rather I did not, do please let me know.
Very many thanks.
