Story
My brother-in-law Kenneth has been helped by Mencap this year to move to independent living. At 42, Kenneth faces challenges in learning new skills alongside autism.
Since last November, daily visits from Mencap staff have supported both Kenneth and the family as he learns to shop, cook, travel and to handle the essentials of living independently.
As a “Thank you!”, I’m willing to train over 4 months, clocking up 550 miles of running 3 times a week with circuit strength training in order to build up the endurance required to tackle the Brathay Marathon on May 22nd —circumnavigating Lake Windermere in Cumbria.
A picturesque route, voted the 2nd favourite in the country, its pleasant scenery only just compensates for the brutal hill climbs and steep ascents and descents along its duration. Rising 1500 feet, with multiple inclines, many parts sap the strength of competitors, often forced to drop to a walk as the terrain takes its toll. The terrain profile below compares the challenge ahead with the London variety—which looks much nicer!
However, amongst the cheers of the many tourists enjoying May sunshine (here’s hoping?!), you can cheer me on to the finish line by pledging your support for Mencap who have transformed not just everyday-life for Kenneth but for us a family too.
