I have competed in many events in the past but this is the first that I have done to raise money for charity and have chosen to support the little known Guillain-Barre Support Group as my charity. Here is why...
Your donations will provide meaningful assistance to people as they come out of the grips of a debilitating disease and take their first steps down a long, arduous and painful road to recovery....
What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome?
This is an ilnness that we first became aware of in 2007 when my father-in-law experienced its extreme effects.
Guillain-Barre ("GBS") is an autoimmune disease which is hard to diagnose and following initial symptoms (tingling hands/feet) can very rapidly lead to a severe state of paralysis.
Often the sufferer needs treatment within an intensive care facility as swallowing, coughing and breathing is difficult. In many cases, a ventilator is also needed as independent breathing is not possible at the most critical stage of the condition.
Recovery
The good news is that most people who suffer this condition do eventually make a full recovery. So......
....why support GBS?
Paralysis, all be it temporary, is so severe that muscle wastage and pain and damage to the nervous system means that the patient must re-learn the most basic of everyday tasks. Extensive physiotherapy and recuperation must be undertaken before a full recovery occurs. Unfortunately, a full recovery is not always enjoyed.
The GBS Support Group provides help and assistance to recovering GBS sufferers but is totally dependent upon fund raising and donations.
GBS hits men, women and children and those that suffer from it need as much help as possible in the critical stages of recovery.
Your donations will provide meaningful assistance to those people as they come out of the grips of this debilitating disease and take the first steps down a long, arduous and painful road to recovery.
