Story
In 2008, just after my 40 birthday, I was diagnosed with lung cancer. Strange as it may seem getting the final diagnosis wasn’t the scarey bit for me-it was going through the process of diagnosis which included chest x-rays, blood tests, CT scan, PET scan and exploratory op and they were all at different hospitals (Berwick, Borders General, The Western in Edinburgh and Edinburgh Royal Infirmary).
I was so on edge not knowing what the outcome was going to be and not knowing what would happen next and when. I can honestly say though that one organisation was fabulous. MacMillan. They gave me so much help. They helped me understand what was going on. They attended clinical meetings and fed back decisions to me. I could phone them at any time and they were always helpful emotionally and practically. They even gave me a grant when money was low after I stopped being paid by my employers.
When I recovered I meant to help raise money to support them but up till now I haven’t done so…but I was at the hairdressers the other week and I had an idea. I am going to shave off my hair to raise money for Macmillan. I was very lucky that the surgery to remove half of my left lung dealt with all the cancer and I didn’t need chemotherapy. Many people with cancer need chemo and lose their hair as a consequence. I am lucky to get to do this through choice.
