Context:
Millions of Afghans are on the verge of facing a catastrophic famine. It is reported that 22 million people (more than half of the population) are facing acute food insecurity in the next 3 months. This risk has been exacerbated by a brutal winter, the worst drought in decades and a frozen economy. Statistics show that 9 million people are at risk of starvation. Hospitals are already full of premature and dying babies, with malnutrition currently being an extremely severe problem. This has led to the unimaginable happening, with parents being forced to make tragic decisions to sell children to buy food for the family's survival. No parent should have to make that decision.
Why and what am I doing to raise money?
I am hoping to raise awareness for this cause within and outside of my community to make a positive impact for innocent people at risk. As the month of Ramadhan has begun, we have all experienced the difficulties of fasting along with the instant pleasure of breaking our fasts. Now, imagine the difficulty of not having the luxury to break our fasts and not knowing when we eventually will have food available to us. That is the sad reality that Afghans are currently facing and therefore I pledge for us all to share/donate to help improve and save innocent lives.
I am climbing Mount Snowdon with my friends for Islamic Relief to raise money for the people of Afghanistan. It has always been an aspiration of mine to climb Mount Snowdon and I am looking forward to trying a new experience for a meaningful cause.
How the money will help?
Here is an overview of what your money can do for Afghans during this dire time:
- £50 can provide hygiene and water storage kits for a displaced family
- £100 can provide a food pack for a displaced family for a month
- £550 can provide a displaced family with emergency shelter
Islamic Relief, a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), is on the ground delivering vital food pack, water storage kits and winter clothing, as well as providing medical care through health centres supporting displaced families.
