Story
Acorn is a charity close to my heart.
Tuesdays are the highlight of my working week. That's when I am at Acorn supporting Jake, a young man who has a disability. This allows me to get out of the office and do something truly rewarding, enjoyable and to make a positive difference in someone's life.
I love working in the greenhouse with Jake and the other lads, because everyone is so friendly and relaxed. Whilst working we chat about sports, holidays, music concerts, hum along to music on the radio and have a good laugh. In the end we treat ourselves to nice meal at Acorn cafe and we are set for the rest of the day.
The reason I love Acorn is because they help young people with disability develop new skills, have access to work opportunities and to be an active part of our community.
Living with a disability often means overcoming challenges on a daily basis. It requires extra effort, resolve and physical and mental strength to do tasks and overcome obstacles which many of us take for granted. This is why I have decided to challenge myself with this once in a lifetime trip, to help raise funds Acorn so that they can continue to support young people with disability to overcome their daily challenges for many years to come.
The global events of the last few years have led me to realise that we only have one life and one chance on this beautiful planet. We should use all opportunities to do meaningful and rewarding things and to try and give something back to our communities.
My wife Irena and I are going to trek to Everest Base Camp from 27 October - 10 November 2022.
What we are doing is a one-off. What young people who have a disability go through is every day of their life, they have to overcome obstacles, they have to fight and mustn't give up.
At the highest point that I can get an internet connection I will try to call Jake on WhatsApp and share the atmosphere (pardon the pun).
All money raised will go directly to support the work of Acorn in providing work and training opportunities to people who have a disability or long-term health condition. I am passionate about the support they provide and I hope that you will all help me to raise funds for this worthy cause.
Many thanks,
Irena & Mladen
