Story
Native women are 2.5 times more likely to be raped or a victim of sexual assault compared to the rest of the US, which is why I hope to raise £250 to support the work of the Urban Indian Health Institute, one of the Seattle Indian Health Board's many programs.
UIHI collects data otherwise overlooked -- data that tells the story of missing and murdered Indigenous woman across the US and Canada. MMIW+ is a human rights crisis disproportionately affecting Indigenous people. Data offers a voice to this crisis.
Additionally, the Seattle Indian Health Board is tackling how COVID-19 is affecting Indigenous communities.
May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in the US. To mark such a day, I welcome you to:
- Run, walk, amble, or promenade a 5k in red anytime from May 5-8. I'll be creating an event on Strava, so watch out for that.
- Join me as I host a Zoom pub quiz on Saturday, May 8. Details TBD.
- Watch this space for COVID face masks that I'll be selling for small donations.
. . .
Note: I've added the "+" to call attention to the fact that many of these missing and murdered individuals are also girls as well as non-binary genders and those who are Two-Spirit.
