Poverty is a widespread problem affecting 1 in 4 children in our city and as many as 40% in certain parts. We are raising funds to be able to open and run a new MK Storehouse site.

Story

It’s a shocking fact that today in our city 1 in 4 children are living below the poverty line! Poverty is widespread and affecting everything from physical, emotional and mental health and many people are struggling to pay for the essentials they and/or their family need.


At MK Storehouse we aim to ensure that any person struggling financially in Milton Keynes is given good, free, quality clothing. It feels like a simple thing, but when we do this we notice time and again how it gives our guests confidence and even more importantly they feel valued.

As well as this, at MK Storehouse we want to meet people where they are at, offering them a cuppa and a friendly ear or someone to talk to, all in a safe and warm environment. We also aim to signpost people to other agencies that can help those who want it with other issues they may be struggling with, like debt or addiction, helping them take a step toward improving and changing their situation long term.

We want to keep making a difference and help even more people to help themselves and as 1/3 of our guests come from the MK6 area we would therefore love to open a site in this part of our city, but we need vital funds to do this.

About the campaign

About the charity

We provide donated clothing for adults and for children of school age upwards free of charge to families and individuals who are in need and have been referred to us. We aim to show that we care and we want to provide support to those in need by offering a listening ear and by signposting where appropriate. We work closely in partnership with other charities and agencies to achieve this. Where there is a need, we sometimes pass on donated clothing to these charities and agencies. Most of the clothing we pass on goes to those in need in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas, although we do sometimes send clothing further afield. People often think of clothing as that is the main thing we need (which of course, is essential) but this is generally well serviced. Actually, one of the largest needs we have at the moment is for vitals funds to keep the charity running and reach the hundreds of men, women and children we do every year. In fact, Community Foundation have just released a report highlighting that the number of children living in poverty in Milton Keynes has increased from 1 in 5 to 1 in 4!
