About Mitchell

Mitchell Cole - 276 senior appearances | 11 clubs | 11 years

On 1st December 2012 Mitchell James Cole, a former professional footballer, died at the age of 27. He left behind a loving wife and three young children; the youngest of which, Leni, will never meet her daddy having been born six days after Mitchell's passing.

Mitchell started his career at Norwich City in 2001. After 11 years of playing, he retired from football in 2012 after being heavilly affected on a personal level by the highly publicised cardiac arrest of Fabrice Muamba, a former Premiership footballer with whom Mitchell shared a nigh-on identical condition.

Mitchell's condition is called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The condition typically affects young athletes and is responsible for sudden catastrophic cardiac arrests, like that that claimed Mitchell's life and that that nearly claimed Fabrice's.

Fundraising

To celebrate Mitchell's life and career, 11 Stevenage FC supporters will walk 60 miles in 18 hours. Each walker will wear a shirt representing each of the 11 clubs Mitchell played for throughout his career.

I will be representing Norwich City FC by wearing their kit throughout the walk.

The walk will take place from Oxford United's Kassam Stadium; Oxford being Mitchell's last professional club, to Stevenage's Lamex Stadium; the club where Mitchell made the majority of his senior appearances as a footballer. The 11 walkers will arrive at the Lamex Stadium, Stevenage, in time for Stevenage's first game of the 2013/14 season.

We will start walking on August 2nd and arrive in Stevenage for the first game of the season on the 3rd. We'll be walking through the night so we'll probably sleep through the game, but at least we're being green!

The cause we're all raising money for is The Cardiomyopathy Association who provide support to those families that are troubled by diseases like Mitchell's.

My personal target is £250. If you can't contribute it's absolutely no problem, but please take a moment to share this page with your friends so at the very least, we can raise as much awareness about the condition and Mitchell's story as possible.

Firstly, thanks for visiting my Fundraising page and choosing to take an interest in Mitchell Cole's life and story, and my efforts to raise some money for The Cardiomyopathy Association.

For those of you who don't know me, I'm a 25 year old Hertfordsherian exile living in Southampton. I've been a supporter of Stevenage FC since 2002 and attend most games with my best friends, my brothers James and Jack.

This August, I'm walking as part of a small group who want to raise as much money and awareness as possible for this cause, and for Mitchell's memory.

This isn't about football as such, it's about the real people that have been affected by this tragic story. Mitchell was only 2 years older than me and it was the first time in my life that I woke up and realised that 'life' is a fragile thing.
