'Operation Safe Space' is a project currently being run by Spotlight UK. Spotlight UK helps disadvantaged and vulnerable families, and what better way to make a child smile than giving them a bedroom makeover and a safe space to call their own.

Story

The girls are tackling Snowdonia, with a difference! On the way up it's a physical trek, the boots have been worn in, appropriate clothing at the ready.

On the way down however...they're flying! Well, ok not flying, but they're taking the world's fastest zip line. Over a mile long, 500ft high & reaching speeds of 100mph. Suddenly the climb sounds easy!

And why are we doing it??

Spotlight UK is aiming to raise £20,000 in order to support vulnerable and disadvantaged young people, adults, and isolated elderly across Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire and Surrey.

They provide emotional and practical support for families through providing mental health care packs to children and adults to improve mental health and put a smile back on faces, emergency clothes/bedding/toys for families fleeing domestic abuse, and children affected by trauma including loss and separation and abuse to help give a smile in a time of darkness, free youth activities including free dance classes to increase confidence, self-esteem and resilience in young people as well as providing respite for parents, intergenerational projects to bridge the gap between young and old and also special experiences and days out to create new positive memories as we cannot take away the past but we can create new positive memories.

They also purchase Christmas presents for children from vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds so that they can smile at Christmas.

They also run a project called Operation Safe Space where we revamp a child's bedroom so that they have somewhere they can feel safe and happy after experiencing trauma or if they have autism.

Their work supports vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people including young carers, children in care, at risk of sexual exploitation, mental health issues, affected by domestic abuse, who have lost parents or siblings, who have a parent in prison, a parent with mental health issues, affected by drug/alcohol abuse and children from low-income families (especially those in the top 20% of deprivation in the UK).

They receive referrals from Schools, Early Help Hubs, Social Workers, Family Support services, and other professionals.
