Story
This August I will run the Swiss Alps 100, a 100km 6,570m total ascent trail races, near the Aletsch Glacier, the longest Glacier in Europe.
I will be running this race to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
My Mother, Pamela Voice, has an aggressive form of Breast Cancer.
One afternoon in early July 2021, I sat on my sofa, trembling hands
clutching my phone. The news came in. I couldn’t breathe. I remember
pacing around my apartment, thoughts flooding in about how to
immediately jump on a plane during Covid, making such emergency plans of action so difficult. I was very grateful to friends who guided me to make one of the most meaningful yet fearful journeys home I have ever taken.
From this moment ensued days, weeks and months of my brave Mother going through the ringer of surgery, Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy, targeted therapy, endocrine therapy and bisphosphonate therapy, to such an extent even members of her care team were surprised at her resilience. There is no choice but to carry on, to stay close as a family (even when usually miles apart) and I am truly mesmerised by the strength and tenacity of my mum.
One of the hardest things is watching someone you love suffer and feeling powerless. I am so grateful to the Macmillan Horizon Centre, a place of sanctuary for those going through very tough treatment, as well as offering a kind space for close ones affected. I went along to the Centre during one of my Mum’s Chemo sessions, and was moved by the loving and hopeful atmosphere, for people experiencing a truly dark time.
So, my way of standing up to my Ma’s Cancer, is in the best way I know. Running.
I want to raise money for this specific centre which relies on donations to offer the amazing care that it does to its patients. They have helped my mum and countless others. I want to help make sure they continue to do so for decades to come.
The race is 100km, through some tricky mountain trail and my toughest race so far. I am ready to tell this barbaric disease,
with every step on that 100km, what I think of it.
I would be really grateful if you can help me raise some money in this way for Macmillan, an important charity caring for those with cancer like my mummy as well as offering support to the surrounding families in the way that they do.
Thank you, so, very much.
