Story
On 22nd September me, my mum Jo and my boyfriend Cashael are going to be climbing Snowdon in aid of Diabetes UK.
As some people may know I was diagnosed with type one diabetes in 2011 when I was 12.
It is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, which is what we need to allow sugar to enter cells to give us energy. It is an auto immune condition of which there is no known cause. People are usually diagnosed during childhood or it can be rarely picked up later in life. It is different to type two diabetes which is when the body becomes resistant to insulin usually due to obesity and bad lifestyle choices.
There is currently no cure for it and it’s managed by taking multiple daily insulin injections and constant finger pricks to test blood sugars.
This has always been a struggle for me and in the last couple of years I have only found the confidence to tell people I had diabetes as I used to be embarrassed, worrying that people would put it down to me having it through ‘being fat’ or ‘eating too much sugar’ which is a huge misconception about type one diabetes.
Having diabetes is a daily struggle both mentally and physically and is a constant drain and I often put up a front and put on a brave face. It was especially difficult in the early days, something like this shouldn’t have to be on a young person’s mind. Despite having had this disease for 8 years now I am still finding it hard to come to terms with the fact I was the unlucky one out of my family and some days find it difficult to even take my injections due to being in denial.
So finally I have decided to raise some money to help find a cure and get my arse into gear so I can go on to live a healthy and long life like any other person.
I would like to raise in excess of £250, but all donations would truly be greatly appreciated!
