Story
Who am I? (.for those that don't know me!)
I am 59, and worked in Housing for over 30 years, for Housing Associations, and Shelter Cymru until recently retiring. I am married to Jayne, also recently retired as a NHS nurse for 39 years and we have 2 grown up children. Outside of work I am a massive fan of Welsh football, and have kept fit my whole life, playing football, running the London marathon at 43 and in recent years doing parkrun, cycling and playing golf.
In January 2022, I was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease/ Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. This is a progressive disease with no cure or effective treatments available at present. I now walk with a stick and use a wheelchair for longer distances outdoors , have extremely poor balance, and become really fatigued as the day goes on. My consultant thinks that my symptoms are in the slow onset category so in this sense I am one of the fortunate ones. Apart from the above, I feel strong and determined, and ready to face this challenge with the support of my wonderful wife and family.
Scientists say that a breakthrough is now tantalizingly close so it is vital that funds continue to be raised for research. It is estimated that the ice bucket challenge accelerated research progress by 5 years, so we need to try to keep up this momentum.
