Update!
Unfortunately due to the current COVID -19 situation, some of the essential campsites and facilities on the NC500 route remain closed. This has meant that I can't ride the route as planned. Although this is disappointing, it simply is not practical to attempt it at this time.
Don't worry though - I don't intend to let this setback mean that all my training and fundraising to date has been wasted! I still fully intend to ride 500 miles over 7 days starting on 6 September and am currently in the process of planning out a selection of routes that I can do throughout Scotland. Hopefully this change of plan will also give me an opportunity to share my ride with some friends and family on each day of the challenge!
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Bike Craft in Edinbugh's Ocean Terminal (www.bikecraft,co.uk) for contributing to my effort by providing me with an amazing complimentary bike fit in preparation for the effort.
My story,,,,
I’ve supported this Brain Tumour Research ever since my diagnosis with a brain tumour 5 years ago. Since then I’ve had have had surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which have all been very effective treatments in their own ways, however this remains an ongoing condition for me with the possibility of further treatments in the future.
Right now though I feel great! So whilst things are good and I’m fit and able, I’m taking on a bit of a challenge. Starting on 6 September this year in Inverness I’ll be riding around the Scottish North Coast 500 route. This challenging route will take me 518 miles around the most stunning, and rugged roads in the country. The plan is to manage this over 7 Days, camping each night.
Cycling was an activity I really missed during my treatment and recovery, and since I was able to literally “get back on the bike” I’ve found it to be a great boost both my mental and physical health. Last year I was able to raise money for Brain Tumour Research when I took part in the 85-mile Etape Caledonia in Perthshire and the 75-mile Tour ‘o the Borders, raising around £2000 thanks to all the wonderful friends and family who donated.
Brain tumours can affect anyone at any age, whats more they kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer – yet historically just 1% of national spend on cancer research is allocated to this devastating disease. Please donate generously if you can.
