Story
What is the 5-5-75 challenge?
Run 5 miles, EVERY 5 hours, for 75 hours. This means running in the middle of the night, potentially in thunder storms. When the 5 hour alarm goes, my shoes are on and I’m off. I’m going to try and better the challenge and do 5.25 miles every 5 hours so that I complete 3 marathon distances within the 75 hours.
Why am I doing it?
Up until secondary school I grew up in a very loving and happy home but at age 12, when my parents separated, my life began to fall apart - I was missing lessons and the threat of exclusion due to truancy was very real. I started getting severe panic attacks. Eikon relentlessly got me through this trying time and persuaded the school to have faith in me. At age 13, my friend Matthew died from anaphylaxis just minutes after he left me to be taken to hospital. Again Eikon was there to guide me through this second life event. At age 16, my mother was rushed to hospital after I found her motionless and unable to talk. It was found that a large tumour had ruptured her bowel. She was given months to live. Eikon supported me yet again and the CEO, Chris Hickford, who became a personal friend of mine, took it upon himself to provide food and transport to my family so that I could continue to study. My mother died 2 weeks before I received my GCSE results. I got 5 As, 5 Bs and a pass in Btec ICT. From a truant and a nervous wreck to a young man capable of putting aside the trauma of his mother’s illness and pass all of his exams. Eikon taught me the mental strength, the techniques and the will power that it takes to push beyond your limits. Nothing is impossible. Bring on the 5-5-75 challenge and I will face it with a smile on my face. If you can be anything, be what you needed growing up.
