Story

Hi there

A group of 15 of us are doing the Three Peaks Challenge in July in memory of my daughter's friend, Justine Derry, who died just before Christmas 2009 after a ten year battle with breast cancer.  Justine fought the disease with strength, incredible positivity and spirit and she is an example to us all.  Her husband, Haydn, has spent the last few months setting up Justine's Trust in aid of Breast Cancer Care.

The purpose of the trust is to strengthen the advice, information and support services available to young women who are diagnosed with primary and secondary breast cancer, with a particular emphasis upon diet and nutrition, fitness and exercise, complimentary therapy and fertility.  The trust will support Breast Cancer Care's activities online, in print and through services that allow people to get personal support.  Whilst the Trust will have its own specific aims all fund raising will go to Breast Cancer Care.

Justine was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30 and subsequently diagnosed with secondary breast cancer 7 years later.  Justine was the most amazing, generous and positive person - she never stopped making everyone smile.  Justine passed away shortly after her 40th birthday last year.  Whilst Justine received considerable medical treatment, the significant changes that Justine made to her lifestyle and diet and the strength that she gained from alternative and complimentary therapy helped her to keep on enjoying the things that she really loved in her life (including walking in the mountains).

Breast cancer is relatively uncommon among younger women, eighty per cent of cases of breast cancer in the UK are in women over 50.  Very few women in their 20s and 30s are faced with secondary breast cancer - for which there is no cure.  Younger women can have very different medical and support requirements and concerns, and because of their relatively low numbers they can feel isolated following their diagnosis.

Anyone with breast cancer or breast health concerns can get free, confidential support and information from the Breast Cancer Care helpline on , open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-2pm
