Story
On the 1st January 2022 it would have been Mick's 60th birthday, we want to raise money to honour him and hope that the money raised will help fund research with the ultimate goal of finding better treatments to extend people's lives living with brain tumours.
We will be walking along Southsea seafront leaving from Eastney Swimming Pool at midday going to Old Portsmouth's Round Tower and back again on the 1st January. We are asking for donations for the walk and anyone who wants to join us on the walk are welcome and we suggest they make a minimum donation of £10.00 each.
For those of you who didn't know Mick, he was a genuine lovely bloke who everyone loved. He was a wonderful husband and father of 5 children and 4 grandchildren. He was proud to be from Portsmouth and was a season ticket holder for Portsmouth Football Club and loved watching Pompey play.
He started feeling unwell in October 2019 and his left arm went numb whilst driving. He was admitted to hospital where they thought he had suffered a stroke, he had many more episodes like this were they kept telling him he was having TIAs. In November after being admitted into hospital again they advised he had focal epilepsy due to the stroke. However, he still was unwell and when they scanned him again in January 2020 he was referred to Southampton Hospital for a biopsy, in February he was told he had never had a stroke and that he had a grade 4 glioblastoma which was inoperable, and his prognosis was 9 months with palliative treatment.
He underwent radiotherapy and several cycles of chemotherapy and around October 2020 he was told the tumour was stable. He coped well with the treatment and had a real positive attitude. He was looking forward to Christmas and celebrating his birthday. Unfortunately at the beginning of Nov 2020 he caught COVID and was on a hospital ventilator for a month and then came home in Jan 2021 having to learn to walk again. He did amazingly well and went from a zimmer frame to walking stick to walking unaided.
However by the end of March he was on a downward spiral having to use his zimmer frame again and becoming more tired. Sadly he lost his fight to the brain tumour on 13th May 2021 surrounded by his family.
We would love to find a cure for this illness or at least better treatment for those living with a brain tumour.
