I've got too much stuff. I really don't want any gifts. And reaching proper old age has made me think about my dad, who didn't live to meet my sons. But every week, when I was very little, he took me to the library and helped me choose a book while he chose one for himself. So I grew up thinking: "This is what proper men do; they read books." I think my career flowed from that. Sarah, who worked for a heart charity, says the BHF do wonderful work – funding research which has led to major breakthroughs, giving advice and support, educating and generally striving to make sure more of us live long, fulfilling lives. Much longer than my dad.
