My sister Lisa died from Breast Cancer aged 39 last year in May 2011. She had spent time at Sue Ryder Hospice in Leckhampton and really liked her stay there. However, this was not her initial thoughts when the issue of a 'Hospice' was discussed.

I admit, i too was not happy at this prospect as Lisa wanted so much to stay at home and i assumed once she was there, we would not get her back home. But her symptoms were becoming unmanageable at home and our only option was for Lisa to spend time at Sue Ryder. As soon as we arrived, we were welcomed with opened arms and with such kindness, all our anxieties soon dispersed. Typical Lisa, made herself known there!

We received so much support and comfort during our time at Sue Ryder, we were treated as family and human beings. The staff were fantastic and i am in awe of their marvellous work. Lisas symptoms were controlled to the point we were able to bring her home, as her wish.

I had misconceptions of 'hospices' and now appreciate that they are not just places where people go to die. They help with symptom management, respite and of course making someones end of their life a most comforting and dignified one.

In the end, Lisa really liked it there and i wish to complete the Starlight Hike to say THANK YOU to Sue Ryder!!!xxxxxxxxx
