Story
So, it's come to this... digital pan-handling via the medium of sponsored walking, eh?
I haven't done a Sponsored Anything since school - since I did a sponsored swim and only completed 8 lengths out of 20 and the whole humiliating experience of having to calculate a percentage of the 50ps and pounds everyone had promised, and were now under no obligation to pay, put me off - I thought - for life.
But people change - and thanks to the miracle of bendy trainers - I find myself in possession of a pair of sturdy walking legs. Who'da thunk it?
I also find myself, recently, on the receiving end of Too Much Bad News about people I know and love getting ill with this disease that affects 1 in 3 people. That's LOADS... Sometimes it's treatable, sometimes not. Sometimes it's caught in time. Sometimes not. Sometimes there's no such thing as 'caught in time'. Sometimes, the treatment can be apocalyptically hardcore, without neccessarily making the person better. I've lost one of my best friends to it, and have another having his head nuked at the moment. I'm trying to make light of it, but it's actually a gruesome business - I'll spare you the details.
Cancer sucks. Maggie's Centres do not suck. They help cancer sufferers and their nearest and dearest - however far they are along in their diagnosis - to connect with supportive people who know what they're going through in a way that many of us are lucky that we can only imagine. Maggie's Centres have practical advice on stuff like benefits, courses on living with cancer and stress reducing strategies. And it's all free of charge.
Sore feet are a small price to pay to help keep that kind of place going, I reckon...
If you can spare a few quid that'd be just... smashing! A fiver is LOADS. I'm sure y'all know the internet donating drill by now...If not, here's the blurby bit:
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
