Story
I have chosen the “Help the Hospice” charity because it is a national charity that is able to support the patient as well as the family. It believes in treating the patient as an individual and because the charity is able to give physical, emotional and spiritual support at a very traumatic time. They believe in adding life to everyday and making every moment memorable to its patients and families. The hospices also offers a range of outpatient services including chronic oedema clinic, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, complementary therapy, art and music therapy.
Last year my brother Kevan passed away in a hospice in the Midlands. During his stay nothing was too much trouble offering ice lollies at any time to try and keep him hydrated and comfortable in the hot weather. Offering meals and snacks when he felt up to eating, as well as supporting his wife and 2 daughters in his final journey.
When I visited my brother at the hospice I felt comforted by the level of care he was receiving as I could see for myself that I could have not looked after him better myself. This was also very comforting for the rest of his family
Without the many donations from the local communities the hospices would not be able to provide the service that they do. This is the reason I have chosen this charity as it will benefit nationwide. I am also aware that in Torbay we also have a remarkable hospice. The hospice is able to support patients and their families in many ways. Unfortunately my husband’s mother passed away at Rowcroft Hospice, Torquay a number of years ago. My husband commented that the care that his mother received was caring and with their support her dignity and comfort was maintained.
My sister in law Sally’s condition was not stable enough to be supported with in a hospice however the outreach service gave great comfort and support to her and her family when she was supported at home before passing away in Torbay hospital.
They all had a great will to enjoy life to the full and they would be proud that I am choosing to support the “Help the Hospice” charity and running the London Marathon 2014 to support of such a worthy charity.
