What does VSO do?

VSO’s work revolves around four development areas, linked to the priorities of our partners, international development targets and our areas of expertise. These are health, participation and governance, secure livelihoods and education.  We’re committed to gender equality in all our work so that men and women have equal opportunities to realise their potential.

Visit http://www.vso.org.uk for more information.

I will be Volunteering with VSO in Cabiao, Nueva Ecija - Philippines for ten weeks and I will be participating in 'Disaster and Risk reduction management.'

The Philippines is the third most disaster-risk country worldwide, and is among the countries where large percentages of the population reside in disaster prone areas.

The Philippines and the municipality of Cabiao is frequently visited by typhoons and has a high level of exposure to tropical storms, heavy rain and extremely strong winds resulting in floods, landslides, and storm surges; and is highly prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.
As you can imagine,  this leads to extreme devastation and has strong affects on the lives of residents in many different ways.

Some of my duties while i'm away will include:

Increasing the awareness of the community to threats and impacts of flooding through awareness raising campaigns.

Enhancing capacity of the community to anticipate and cope with the impacts of disaster by supporting our partners in conducting relevant training in contingency planning and pre-emptive evacuation.

Developing resource materials on civic participation and disaster preparedness.

Please feel free to contact me at michelle_crocker137@hotmail.com if you have any questions or would like to know any more information.

Thank you all so much for your support, it is greatly appreciated.
