We help people with ME/CFS to understand and survive their illness

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

As some of you know, Angus's brother, Douglas, has suffered from ME for many years, since his early twenties. What started as a feeling of prolonged tiredness, quickly progressed to a whole host of other symptoms and intolerances. Instead of enjoying his 20's and early 30's as he should have been doing, the ME has been so severe that Douglas has now been housebound for 9 years. The smallest of tasks can cause him to need days to recover (sometimes weeks). All the little things we take for granted on a daily basis are massive challenges in his life; having a conversation with friends, reading a book, using the internet, eating your favourite meal.

ME effects approx 250,000 people in Britain, and it is estimated that 25% of these people will have severe ME, like Douglas. There is currently no cure, no government funded research and so much to learn about the illness and it's causes. More research is desperately needed.

Despite his illness, Douglas has carried out hours of his own research in an attempt to find ways to help. Sadly, the medical world is still to provide any real answers, but despite all the odd's Douglas remains positive and continues to fight the condition quietly and patiently, taking each day as it comes, and for that he is an inspiration.

Charities like the ME Association support medical research and provide practical help and support to people like Douglas, at a time when they need it most. So anything you can give to help us fight this debilitating illness will be much appreciated by our family, and by ME sufferers worldwide.

Angus and I hope that by taking on a challenge such as Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, spending 7 nights under canvas on the worlds highest free standing mountain, climbing 19,341ft feet, facing the challenges of altitude trekking and +30 to -20 deg C temperatures, we will help to raise awareness and money to support further research and support for ME sufferer's like Douglas. Lets help their voices be heard!
