Michael O'Brien is raising money for The Dockland Settlements
Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
After only ever doing one half marathon, I have decided to have a crack at the London marathon for what, I believe, is a deserving cause.
The Dockland Settlements were established in 1894 as a way
of supporting poor and destitute families in London’s East End and since inception has helped well over half a million people in some of the UK’s most deprived areas. This work continues today, and the Group operates 2 community centres in London’s former docklands providing vital, everyday support to local communities in the area.
This includes child care provision (without which parents would be unable to go to work), homework clubs, support for immigrant communities and social activities, in particular for the elderly, disabled and teenagers. As you can guess, this is not a charity with huge advertising spends, focus groups or legions of paid executives 'guiding' it. Instead, monies raised will go to the people most needing of it.
Although the privations of my, now tapering, training regime does not and will not extend to the ultimate sacrifice of giving up alcohol, those who know me well will be somewhat shocked to note that I have given up playing football for 6 months whilst I train.
Training seems to have gone broadly to plan (in spite of the foul winter) and much to the gratitude of my wife and colleagues it got me out of the house or office 4 or 5 times a week, including before 7am most Sundays.
