Story
I am not in very good shape. I have legs like a 7 year old girl. I hate mountains. I thoroughly dislike walking, particularly uphill, and I'm scared of heights. Soooo I have decided to climb Kilimanjaro in October both for a challenge and to raise some dosh for Marie Curie. Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895 metres (19,340 feet) above sea level and is both the highest mountain in Africa and the largest freestanding mountain in the world. Should be a doddle.....
I'll be training solidly for 2 months, going the gym at least 3 times a week and doing the 3 peaks challenge in September with some colleagues from work. In total, the kilimanjaro climb will take 7 days up and down. I'll be travelling over to Tanzania alone and am funding the whole expedition myself so all your pennies will be going direct to Marie Curie. Luvly.
Marie Curie is great for lots of reasons. Marie Curie has 2,000 nurses in the UK and last year they worked for 1,200,000 hours caring for terminally ill patients, including half of all cancer patients who die at home. They also have nine hospices and are the biggest provider of hospice beds outside the NHS. In total, Marie Curie spends over £80 million a year on its charitable activities of providing care as well as on research and development. The figure is overwhelming, but so is the comfort that the money can provide.
