My name is Mervyn and I was annoyingly diagnosed with Colon cancer in late March this year. This was after years of going to the GP with complaints of IBS which was always dismissed as stress related specifically given my relatively young age. It was not until I demanded that more was done that a colonscopy was carried out and the cancer discovered.
Thankfully the prognosis I am told is good. However I have learnt the hard way to advocate for myself within the health care systems. This is now something I want others to do, ideally so that cancers and issues are spotted much earlier. This is especially important for young people who often are not registered or do not attend the GP at all.
During this time a number of really kind friends have asked is there anything they can do to help and on giving it some thought yes there is...
As many will know I am the CEO of Youth First, a youth work organisation in london. They have been incredibly supportive to me whilst I undergo required ops and chemo and I am incredibly grateful to all at this wonderful organisation. Part of what YF does is empower young people including within a school setting. I would like to raise money for YF and specifically this program and look to add an element to it and other work YF does that teaches young people how to advocate for themselves in a constructive way and to promote healthy lifestyles including registering and using GPs. This is partly within health services but equally important a skill in other areas of life.
With this in mind please feel free to donate to YF here. Once all my chemo is over I will also look at doing some sponsored events to try and raise the money. So if you want to wait for me to earn your support that's cool too.
