This year we going to be taking part in 10km / 6 mile Memory Walk to raise awareness and support of dementia.
Memory Walks are a series of fundraising walking events taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland every September, all raising money to provide vital support to people living with dementia and help research to find a cure for the future.
We have someone very close to us suffering with this awful disease, my dad Brian. Over the past few years Brian's dementia, like anyone diagnosed with this disease, deteriorated. We grew fond of his repetitive stories from the past, his sense of humour and determination to keep living as normal. But sadly in May he unexpectedly became very ill and his memory plummeted, despite 6 weeks in hospital it was clear that there was going to be no improvement. It now takes him a while to recognise who we are, gets very emotional and frustrated at not being able to communicate well and is living in a nursing home where he needs round the clock care.
We know that the walk isn't as energetic as climbing Everest or as daring as a skydive but we're not the most fit or adventurous type it has to be said. Therefore any donation, however small, will really mean a lot to us both but more importantly raise money for a cause close to our hearts.
