We fund long-term, sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours

Story

My husband, Stuart, was otherwise a healthy 51 year old. Never suffered with headaches, but all of a sudden was getting neck pain, aching eyes and also headaches. He had to lie in a darkened room for hours some days and then his vision was not able to be corrected. It got so bad he couldn't drive or use a computer for his work, let alone see his phone clearly. Stuart was getting vertigo and it would be so bad that he'd have to get down on the floor otherwise he'd feel like he would fall. When Stuart finally managed to see our Doctor (during Covid19) he looked into Stuart's eyes and saw pressure behind one of them. Stuart was told to go to A&E straight away and after CT and MRI scans they told us he very likely had Glioblastoma Multiforma which is an aggressive type of (Grade 4) primary brain tumour.

After surgery to debulk most of the tumour and then further surgery for a VP Shunt to drain the fluid buildup in his brain he then had 6 weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The VP Shunt kept blocking up when he was recovering from treatment and because of this he was having more seizures. The seizures were getting longer every time, even though he was taking anti-seizure drugs. There were quite a few trips in the Ambulance to the hospital each time this happened.

Eventually Stuart was too weak to walk and to see such a strong healthy man change like this is heart breaking and devastating to the whole family. In the last week of his life, the Doctors at the hospital gave him an MRI Scan of his spine and found that the tumour had spread extensively from his brain into his spine.

From diagnosis to the date Stuart died was only 6 months, but it was the most traumatic time for him and his family.

I want to raise awareness so that people get seen quickly for an urgent CT Scan and to have regular Scans after treatment.
