London Landmarks Half Marathon 2021 · 1 August 2021 ·
Group B Streptococcus is the UK's most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies & of meningitis in babies under age 3 months. Most of these infections are preventable. About 800 babies a year develop group B Strep infection in the UK. Approximately 70 die, and 50 recover with life-changing disabilities.Group B Strep Support works to raise awareness, educate health professionals about group B Strep, and support families affected by the devastation caused by group B Strep infection.
Five years ago, whilst working as a Community Midwife, I cared for a very special family whose baby girl was tragically ‘born sleeping’ due to a Group B Strep (GBS) infection. Since then, GBS has become a subject very close to my heart.
In contrast to most western countries, the UK does not offer routine testing for GBS.
Group B Strep Support charity actively raise awareness of the hazard of GBS infections and, until the NHS change policy, promote private testing which is both accurate and inexpensive.
I’m supporting this worthy charity by running the London Landmarks Half Marathon and hope to raise as much money as possible.
