According to the American Cancer Society, “In the United States, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.” How true this is. Everyone knows someone or is that someone who has had cancer.

Madeline and Melissa both grew up swimming on the Mammoth Sharks Team, and we are excited to swim five miles in the month of May to support ACS and bring attention to its work with cancer patients.

We would like to swim in memory of Lesley Anne Hoxie. She was kind and energetic, and she was taken too soon by melanoma.

In addition, when Madeline was twenty years old, she was diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin’s). American Cancer Society helped with wigs when she lost her hair and support groups. She has now been cancer free for thirteen years.

Our lives have also been touched by the cancer battles of those we love care about. Melissa’s mother and grandmother are both cancer survivors.
