Story
This March along with about 20 other crazy kids I met in Malawi (and some new friends to be made too) I am taking on a bit of a challenge.. You may recall that last year I did a half marathon in Malawi with Impact Marathons . This year I am going to Guatemala for another week of volunteering work with the small matter of a run at the end.
The Impact
The charities that we will be working with, are SERES and Caras Alegres. These are both grassroot charities who are combatting the inequality that unfortunately runs through the country from supporting ostracised indigenous communities, to the challenge of inspiring a new generation to be young leaders.
I have been to a talk by SERES, and learnt that they also get involved in community projects to do with climate change and displacement as a result of volcanic eruptions among other things. If I learnt anything from Malawi it is that they will be finding some hard labour for us runners to undertake on our volunteering days! I also learnt first-hand how the projects chosen effect real change in the local communities that we are lucky enough to work directly with and live among for the week that we are there. If you would like to sponsor the charities involved (and my little legs), all donations no matter how small will be greatly appreciated and go directly to the charities.
The race
I am going to be doing my first marathon (called ‘The Beast of Pacaya’ if the thought isn’t already frightening enough). The course goes down then up the volcano, and yes, it is active. The video says it all...

Carbon footprint
For those of you thinking about my carbon footprint from flying across the globe, I have arranged for 40 trees to be planted in Guatemala to go some small way to combat this.
Thank you

There will certainly be some difficult times during the week, but I am sure that I and everyone else will get much more from the experience than we can give. I am hopeful that the little time and energy I can give will make a difference in at least one person’s life. Thank you for any support that you can give, and I hope to update you on a finished race in March!
