Story
Multiple Myeloma is an incurable blood cancer. Each week, in Australia, there are 38 people who receive this devastating diagnosis. Seven years ago, I was one of them. I was 48 years old.
On May 18th 2022 (previously scheduled for May 15th), I and a group of enthusiastic supporters are challenging ourselves to walk 38km for "38Mates", for those 38 people who will be diagnosed that week.
It is almost a marathon in distance and it will certainly feel like one, but that is exactly what Multiple Myeloma is - a marathon.
Since my diagnosis in 2015, my body has endured 3 stem cell transplants, radiotherapy and numerous treatment drugs. Myeloma has been unrelenting and I am now feeling the effects of so many years of ongoing harsh treatment.
To put things into perspective, 12 months ago I could barely walk for 10 mins due to some pretty severe Myeloma related bone lesions in my hip. This walk will require me to be on my feet walking, close to 10 hours!
This challenge will be hard but I have given myself 6 months to train for it. Also, as I am currently receiving treatment 3 times a week, navigating the side effects of treatment certainly impacts my training ability.
I am welcoming others to join me for some or all of the walk to help raise awareness of Myeloma and funds to go towards Myeloma research. As it stands now, my walking companions for the full 38km walk include Christine and Daniel Carter and Cass Holt. Come along and join us for part of the walk or meet us at one of our stops.
Thanks to Myeloma Australia, who have provided me with amazing support, advocacy and education. It's time to give back. The funds I raise will go directly into the Bob Moran Memorial Research Fund which supports Myeloma related research in Australia.
We need research to help find a cure!
So, thanks to you for supporting me in raising funds for Myeloma Australia.
