Story
As some of you may or may not know, in January last year I was out cycling on the country roads outside Inverness before being hit by a car that did not see me.
Amongst many injuries, I was left paralysed due to a spinal cord injury and spent 7 months in a spinal rehabilitation unit. As a PE teacher who was active at every opportunity, the news that I would potentially never walk again was as frightening as you can imagine.
Almost immediately after my prognosis my mind turned to sport and the opportunities that I can't wait to get stuck in to. When the opportunity to go on a sit skiing course in Colorado came about, I knew I had to go. I loved travelling before my accident and to regain the confidence to do so again was so important to me. Every aspect of the trip was amazing and I already cannot wait to go back. The group that went included those from all aspects of life and I can truly say everybody involved gained a variety of equally incredible things from the experience! Unfortunately due to funding, the course now runs every other year due to expenses.
Back up is a charity that supports all affected by a spinal cord injury. They run courses that range from increasing wheelchair skills in the city to sit skiing in the USA - aiming to present challenges and build confidence. Additionally the support they provide in Spinal Units across the country including mentoring that is available on a daily for those with an injury and family members is life changing.
Ultimately Back Up prove that there is a life to live after a spinal cord injury, and a blooming good one at that! So to ensure others continue to get the chance to be supported by Back Up, I'm taking on a super challenge to raise some money. In April, I aim to complete 3 marathons in 3 days in 3 different cities in Scotland. Starting on April 26th in Glasgow, pushing my way to Edinburgh over 2 days and aim to finish the weekend off by taking on the Stirling marathon on the 28th. I will be doing this in my day to day wheelchair which is really not designed for endurance or speed!! Alongside me will be some of my friends & family that have been lucky/unlucky enough to get the call up to run beside me!
Sympathy is not required, but donations help support all the exciting adventures that are possible.. thank you!!
