Story
Thanks for visiting Melanie and Hayley’s fundraising page!
As you probably know we both work as nurses on the Woodlands Unit at the L&D. Prehaps what you don't know is we’re running the Great North Run on 15th September to show our support and raise money for specialist equipment and comfort items ~ helping make each child’s stay more fun and less distressing.
The 13.1 mile route is certainly going to be a challenge but we’ve been training hard!
Any sponsorship from friends, family and work colleagues would be greatly appreciated. The Team on the Woodlands Unit does fantastic work and we want to support it as much as we can.
Around 10,000 babies, children and teenagers are cared for on the Unit every year. The Woodlands Unit is made up of 3 special wards ~ Squirrel Ward, Rabbit Ward and Hedgehog Ward, treating around 60 inpatients everyday.
Having to spend time in Hospital, whether it’s a day or a month, is not enjoyable for anyone but it’s particularly distressing for children. Various studies show that a positive healing environment can improve both the speed and quality of a patient's recovery by up to 10%. Children are most comfortable and relaxed when at home. By trying to recreate this homely environment and surround them by ‘normal’ things makes it much easier for them to settle in.
The team relies on generous donations to buy extra medical equipment, toys and other comfort items to make the children’s stay more fun and less distressing.
Thank you very much for your support!
Melanie and Hayley xx
