Story
Waterloo Uncovered combines world-class archaeology with a program of care and recovery for veterans and serving military personnel suffering from some of the physical and mental impacts of their service. Since 2015 the charity has been excavating on the site of one of the world's most decisive battles - Waterloo in Belgium. In that time, they have supported over 100 beneficiaries and have made important new discoveries about the battle and the armies who took part in the battle of Waterloo in 1815.
My Story:
I had the privilege of being a participant on Waterloo Uncovered in 2018. In all honest I had no idea about archaeology digging apart from watching the Time Team on TV? Waterloo Uncovered was a huge game changer for me; Why... it helped me rediscovered my passion for history and much more, giving me focus back into my life. It helped me move forward in my journey in transition to civilian life and facing my hidden wound - Complex Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which was diagnosed in Summer of 2015 after serving in Iraq, Kosovo & Afghanistan with the British Army.
The Waterloo Uncovered Tabbing Challenge:
Waterloo Uncovered, Official 2.6 Challenge may be over, but I'm still going! I was veteran beneficiary of Waterloo Uncovered in 2108/19 and is now a key member of the WU team, I will be continuing my Tabbing (fast paced marching with a weighted rucksack) challenge until I have completed the distance from Waterloo London, to Waterloo Belgium and BACK making the total distance 724.2Km.
As part of our 2.6 Challenge, I decided to march 5.2Km every day for 26 days to raise £1,000. After achieving this goal, I decided to keep going - and I'm now going to complete 724.2Km of Tabbing, within the fastest time possible carrying 20+Kg in weight having already completed 231Km already
! It costs £3,000 for WU to support one beneficiary through they Support Programme, and by reaching his target, I will be funding a veteran to benefit from the programme like I have.
Thank you everyone :)
