Story
On 2nd October 2022, I will line up in Blackheath for the start of the London Marathon, for one very special reason. In January 2021, Mum was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, a muscle wasting disease that causes weaknesses in her body leading to severe mobility issues. There are many different types of MD and we are still waiting to find out her exact diagnosis and, as it is hereditary, how it will affect my siblings and I. Testing and diagnosis is a long and drawn out process and there is no guarantee we will get a definitive answer. But, Mum has accepted the challenge thrown at her and I wanted to do something to show her we are supporting her the whole way!
Not only will I be running the London Marathon in October, but I will also be taking part in a 10K or half marathon in every month of 2022; this will be my very own 12 in 12 challenge. I know this will be a big challenge, but seeing what others go through, shows me that I can achieve anything if I put my mind to it.
Muscular Dystrophy UK have been there to support us along the way, offering support and words of wisdom when we have been through some of the toughest times so far. Currently, there is no cure for muscular dystrophy but with the money raised, we will be able to help with funding to support extra research in finding a cure for MD. Muscular Dystrophy UK can also use the money raised towards providing care and resources to allow people, like Mum, to adapt their lives to live with the condition.
Muscular Dystrophy UK is the charity for the 70,000 children and adults living with muscle-wasting conditions in the UK. There's currently no cure, and it many cases, it limits lives. MDUK do vital work in funding pioneering research into treatments and cures as well as providing vital information, advice, resources and support for individuals and families living with these conditions. All donations, big or small, are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
