Malcolm Walker’s fundraising page for Alzheimer’s Research UK and Walking With The Wounded

Please note that the first £1 million raised through this page will be donated to Alzheimer's Research UK. If you specifically want your donation to go to Walking With The Wounded, plase visit www.justgiving.com/footsteps of legends

Last year my son Richard and I climbed 23,000ft to the North Col of Everest with The Iceland Everest Expedition, which helped to raise more than £1.2 million for Iceland’s Charity of the Year, Alzheimer’s Research UK.

How do you follow that? Simple. I have set myself the new challenge of walking the last two degrees, or 140 miles, to the Geographic South Pole, hauling everything I will need for my survival on a sledge. I am honoured to be doing this in the company of three wounded soldiers from the Royal Dragoon Guards, the regiment of the legendary Captain Oates, in this centenary year of Scott’s Polar expedition.

The Expedition’s fundraising will be supported by the always inventive efforts of my colleagues at Iceland in our annual Charity Week. Together we aim to raise a further £1 million for Alzheimer’s Research UK, to fund a vital study to improve the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, and up to a further £1 million for Walking With The Wounded, which funds the re-training and re-education of wounded servicemen and women to help them find long term employment after they have left the armed forces.

There could surely be no more deserving charities than these two: helping to tackle the massive epidemic of dementia in the UK, research into which remains seriously underfunded compared with cancer or heart disease; and giving something back to those brave young servicemen and women who have put their lives on the line for our country.

To simplify administration, all funds for both these truly excellent causes are being collected through Iceland’s very own charity, The Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation. Iceland has given more than £9 million to charity over the last 25 years, and the Foundation is designed to channel this giving in the most effective way in future.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

However, if you prefer, we would be equally delighted to receive your cheque made payable to The Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation at The Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation, Second Avenue, Deeside Industrial Park, Deeside, Flintshire CH5 2NW.

Thank you
