Story

In memory of Maxwell James Fisher. Born 26th April 2020 at 2.05am, weighing 10 pounds, 12 ounces. Our beautiful, brave little boy. After a seemingly healthy pregnancy, with my 12 and 20 week scans being as perfectly normal as they could be, I had no idea to the extent our world was going to be turned upside down in a matter of weeks. At my routine 28 week midwife appointment, my lovely midwife measured me and found I was measuring at 34 weeks. I was sent for a growth scan and told not to worry. Reassuringly, I was told that people were sent for growth scans all the time. I wasn’t worried and even laughed and joked with Owen and friends that we were having a big baby. Because of the Coronovirus pandemic, Owen was unable to come with me and sat in the car park outside the hospital. I went in for the scan alone, nervous but unafraid. After a while, the sonographer took off her protective face mask, looked at me and said two words I will never forget. “I’m concerned”. She then told me that our baby had a lot of fluid around of and inside of him. She went to get a specialist sonographer in to take a look. I was left alone in a dark, small sonography room without my husband, terrified for my baby and what was to come. We were referred to the Fetal Medicine Unit at Derby Royal Hospital where our poorly boy was diagnosed with a condition called Fetal Hydrops; a condition we had never heard of and a condition that has no clear statistics. However, what is made clear from doctors and websites is that it is extremely, extremely rare. Even the NHS website has no link to any reliable information about it. We had weekly scans, blood tests and genetic testing to try and determine a cause, yet none as of yet have been found. Completely unexplained. Maxwell had no structural abnormalities, no genetic abnormalities, no blood disorders, yet fluid was rapidly increasing inside of him which in turn was effecting the development of his lungs. After four weeks of regular scans and testing, we were given the devastating news that it was highly likely Maxwell would die in the womb. While there was always a slim chance of survival, we decided we wanted to do all we could to give our son the chance of life and carried on with our pregnancy for as long as possible. After the five most difficult weeks of our lives, Maxwell James Fisher was born via emergency C Section at Nottingham City Hospital and into the care of some of the most talented neonatal doctors in the industry. We will never forget their unwavering support, skill and empathy when it came to looking after not only our child, but us as new parents too. Maxwell will always be our first born son and we are so proud of him. We were told he would only survive half an hour after birth, yet he survived for nearly 2 hours. We were told it was highly unlikely he would respond to initial treatment, yet he did. He will always be the one who made us a Mummy and Daddy and no one can take that away from us. We are determined that our Maxxie will not be forgotten and his legacy will help many more parents like us. Therefore we have set up this page to raise as much money as we can for the charities that have helped and will continue to help us and many other bereaved families with their loss. Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity), Aching Arms and 4Louis provided us with the comfort we needed and made us feel significantly less alone. We have a beautiful memory box filled with lovely pictures, prints and memories of our boy. We were able to give Maxxie a tiny silver heart for him to hold as he spends his time in hospital. We were given a teddy bear in the name of another baby who sadly lost their life, donated by another bereaved family. I was given a self-care bag to help me with my physical recovery after giving birth. All these sad, but wonderful things made possible by these three charities. We are so grateful of donations made of any amount to support these wonderful charities and hope to raise as much money possible to support other bereaved families. Maxwell James Fisher. We will always love you x
