Story
The Challenge to run 100 miles total in 2016, using any organised event, we can enter. By organised we mean any event with an official time received at the end.
This year for example Michael on Maxine's behalf plans on running in the Fleet and Basingstoke Half Marathon, Grim 8 in Aldershot and the Hook 10k, that alone is over 40 miles. Local events such as the Basingstoke parkrun will add 3 miles a time, whilst not a massive amount of miles, the idea is to raise awareness by attending events wearing the Vasculitis Vest
Vasculitis is a rare autoimmune disease, which Maxine was diagnosed with last year. It affects about 2-3000 new people each year in the UK. Vasculitis means inflammation of the blood vessels. Any vessels in any part of the body can be affected.
People suffering from vasculitis often experience muscle weakness and chronic fatigue. Some experience chronic pain due to nerve damage or severe migraines/headaches due to damaged blood vessels in the head. Others require dialysis or kidney transplants. Many have breathing problems and others are left with permanent physical disabilities. It is relentless and affects all age groups from children to older people.
One of the difficulties is getting a diagnosis as this disease mimics many others. At the worst end life can be lost before it is diagnosed, for others life continues with some remissions and some relapses. Treatment amongst many things includes, cytoxic drugs and steroids. Whilst Maxine can't run, she is taking part in research in trying to find a definitive diagnostic test for this horrible disease.
On a personal note I cannot thank Michael enough for taking on this challenge, every penny is crucial and there are may lives out there depending on the help Vasculitis UK can offer.
Much love Maxine. xxx
