Story
After starting my running journey at the beginning of 2021, this year I'll be taking on the challenge of completing the Great North Run in memory of my grandma, Chris, and to raise money for Dementia UK, together with Mum who has completed the 3 previous GNRs for Dementia UK
My grandma was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2017, and sadly only 2 years after her diagnosis she passed away. My grandma was a huge part of my childhood and I have so many brilliant memories of the time I spent with her, and I miss her dearly. I'll always remember her as I always know she remembered me, even when she was ill..
My grandparents came from Newcastle and back in 1985 my grandma completed the Great North Run alongside my dad, so the Great North Run means a lot to me and my family. My grandma was always so proud of her medal, proudly showing it to me and my mum.
I'm sad that my grandma was never able to see me complete the same run that she finished nearly 40 years ago, but I hope that I can do her proud. Dementia UK are a brilliant charity who provide specialist dementia support to families with their Admiral Nursing Service, alongside support and advice online and over the telephone. They also support people with dementia and help them live independently for longer, something I know my grandma would have loved. My family didn't know about these services at the time, but through raising awareness and money for Dementia UK I really hope that others will benefit from these services. I often find it difficult to ask people for money, but I'd massively appreciate any and all donations as every pound I raise will be helping make a difference to people with dementia and their families.
Mum and I will take on the challenge together this year, just as Grandma did with Dad back in 1985. However, Mum assures me that I will be considerably faster than her!
We have decided to share our fundraising page in memory of Grandma and are both very grateful for any donations to the charity in memory of an amazing Grandma and Mother in law - thank you.
