Matthew has set himself a lockdown challenge to cycle on an exercise bike the distance from Lands End to John O’Groats, a total distance of 874 miles (1407km)
Matthew is 12 years old and is a keen sportsman playing rugby for Winnington Park Rugby Club and Hockey for Winnington Park Hockey Club, as-well as playing for Northwich Cricket club during the summer.
He decided to set himself this challenge to keep up his fitness due to the impact of the Covid pandemic causing widespread restrictions to training and matches.
His dad Martin is a volunteer counsellor for St Luke’s and I am a local GP and we had discussed with Matthew the impact that covid was having on charities being able to do their normal fundraising activities. With this in mind Matthew would like to use his challenge as an opportunity to help do some fundraising for St Luke’s Hospice in Cheshire
Since 1988, St Luke’s has been providing palliative care to local people, supporting them in ways which go beyond the scope and funding of the NHS. Last year they supported over 1,000 local people with a huge range of support from end of life care on their ward to supporting carers, and from helping children cope with grief to helping patients return to work after an illness.
They are a charity and provide all of their care for free, so they rely on the generosity and commitment of our supporters to raise more than 80% of our costs.
