Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
- What prompted you to swim around the island?
In 2014 I completed the same swim but as part of a 6 person HSBC
relay. I absolutely loved this challenge and ever since then I have said that I wanted to complete the swim solo.
- When is it happening?
My first swim window is 3-7 July, with following windows
throughout July/August. Its all dependent on the weather being favourable during this window as to whether the swim goes ahead. We can predict the tides, but unfortunately not the weather as easily
Why STEPS?
- 2 of my children were born with bi-lateral talipes – commonly known as club feet – quite rare in Jersey so to have 2 belies the odds! STEPS were amazing in their support of me and my family as all treatment is in the UK. In addition they do fantastic work in 3rd world countries for people with lower limb deficiencies.
- Do you have a financial target in mind?
£500 per charity would be amazing
- How long have you been training?
Since Jan 7th 2019
- Outline a weekly training schedule
Jan to March – 4 swims per week in the pool building up to
10-12k per week
From April , move into the sea (bear in mind the sea temp is
just below 10 degrees!) and starting at 30 mins and currently hitting 60-75 mins.
- What have you found challenging? Physical and mental aspects?
One of the reasons for doing this was to help me lose weight. I
dropped 2.5 stone between Jan and March which has hugely benefited me in getting fitter. However upon moving into the sea my body has struggled with adapting to the cold. At my heavier weight it was never an issue – I had plenty of ‘warmth’ – losing the body fat has not helped me in this regard. But it’s just a case of acclimatising and retraining the body which has been a struggle and has started to niggle at my confidence in the water. This is new territory for me so it’s been interesting to go through this process.
