Story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
In 1998 my father was diagnosed with Dystonia. This is a rare movement disorder which is very debiltating and incurable. He is unable to support his head and wears a collar every day. This condition is not only debilitating but is also extremely painful. The usual perscribed medications was unsuccessful (which occurs 1 in 5 suffers). For 8 years the pain relief medication was increased to a very high level which, along with his condition, prevented him from any active life and remained in bed approx 20 out of every 24 hours.
In May 2006, Prof T. Aziz carried out pioneering brain surgery (DBS) which was the beginning of the change in his life.
Today, my father is a different man. His pain reduction has enabled him to reduce the vast amount of medication he takes and allowed him to have a more active life. He still has to wear his collar and has some bad days where he needs more rest, but the majority of the time he is able to walk with my mother and potter in the garden which is more than he has been able to do over the last 10 years.
Dystonia can hit anyone, anytime, any age. My father was a very fit, sporting man who played football, ran a football team for Henley Boys FC, and excercised regularly.
Prof Aziz is an amazing gentleman. His research and professionalism has given my father some of his life back to enjoy. Without his dedication and knowledge both my father and many other people would still be suffering an extreme condition.
